Embossing & Cutting

  • From the velvet cut a 9 x 22-inch piece.
  • Emboss the velvet in a random pattern using assorted snowflake stamps. Place the stamp image face up on the ironing surface and position the velvet face down on the stamp. Lightly mist the back of the velvet with water. Taking care not to move the stamp or the fabric, press with a hot iron for 20 to 30 seconds.
  • Enlarge the pattern pieces and cut the front, back and flap from the embossed velvet and from the lining fabric.

Making the Purse

1.

With right sides facing, sew the purse front and back together using 1/2-inch-wide seam allowances. Repeat with the lining, leaving a 3-inch-long opening in one side for turning. Trim the seams to 1/4 inch and clip the corners (Figure 1).

2.

With right sides together, sew the flap lining to the velvet flap along the side and bottom edges. Trim the seams to 1/4 inch and clip the corners. Turn right side out and lightly press the outer edges carefully from the lining side. Use your fingers and avoid putting the weight of the iron on the fabric to prevent flattening the embossed design (Figure 2).

3.

With right sides together, pin the flap to the upper edge on one side of the velvet purse. Stitch in place 3/8 inch from the raw edge (Figure 3).

4.

Slip the velvet purse into the lining with right sides together. Stitch the upper edges together and trim the seam allowance to 1/4 inch (Figure 4).

5.

Turn the purse right side out through the opening in the lining. Finger-press the upper-edge seam as needed or use the iron carefully on the lining side only.

6.

Pull the lining out of the bag and machine-stitch the turned edges of the seam allowance together at the opening or slipstitch by hand if you prefer.

7.

Remove the hanging loop from the tassel and hand-tack the tassel to the bottom point of the bag, using doubled metallic thread in your hand-sewing needle.

8.

For the strap, make an overhand knot 1 inch from each end of the silver cord. Securely hand-tack the strap to each side of the purse. Untwist the cord at each end below the knots to "fringe" and trim to 1/2 inch. Tie the cord in an overhand loop to knot as shown in the finished purse.

9.

Sew a snap fastener to the underside of the flap and to the purse front. Sew the button to the flap about 3/4 inch above the point. Note: You can substitute a stray rhinestone earring for the button. Use wire snips to remove the back. Hand-sew or glue the jewel in place on the flap.

Practice on Scraps
Practice the embossing process on scraps before you try it on the actual piece for the purse. When embossing velvet, avoid the iron steam vents. Place only a smooth portion of the soleplate of the iron over the stamp.
