Garden Baby Headbands

A dainty butterfly and delicate flower adorn these fashionable little headbands that make cute accessories for Baby's wardrobe. The pattern for these easy-to-stitch thread bands can be easily adjusted to fit any length of elastic for a perfect, comfortable fit!

Finished Size
Head circumference 13-15 inches

Materials

  • Crochet cotton size 10: 50 yds each white and pink, 5 yds pastels, 2 yds mint
  • Size 5 steel crochet hook or size needed to obtain gauge
  • 26 inches 1/4-inch-wide elastic
  • 4mm white pearl bead
  • Sewing needle and thread
  • Tapestry needle

Gauge
4 sts = 1/2 inch;
3 pattern rows = 1/2 inch
Check gauge to save time.

Pattern Notes
Weave in loose ends as work progresses.
Join rnds with a sl st unless otherwise stated.
Inc or dec number of rows of headband to fit infant head comfortably and adjust elastic as needed.

Elastic Preparation
Cut a 13-inch length of elastic, overlapping ends 1/4 inch; sew ends tog to form a circle.

Butterfly Headband

Band
Make 2

Row 1: With white, ch 5, sc in 2nd ch from hook, dc in next ch, sc in next ch, dc in next ch, turn. (4 sts)
Rows 2–108: Ch 1, sc in first dc, dc in next sc, sc in next dc, dc in next sc, turn. At the end of Row 108, fasten off.

Joining
Row 1: Holding bands tog and working through both thicknesses along long edge of band, attach white in side edge of Row 1, ch 1, [sc, ch 3, sc] in same st as beg ch-1, ch 1, [sk next st, {sc, ch 3, sc} in next st, ch 1] rep across edge, ending with sl st in last st, fasten off.
Row 2: Holding elastic circle sandwiched between bands and working through both thicknesses along long edge, attach white, ch 1, [sc, ch 3, sc] in same st, ch 1, [sk next st, {sc, ch 3, sc} in next st, ch 1] rep across, ending with sl st in last st, leaving a length of cotton, fasten off.
With rem length, sew beg and ending of rows tog.

Butterfly
Wings

Rnd 1: With pastels, ch 2, [sc, ch 3] 8 times in 2nd ch from hook, join in beg sc. (8 ch-3 sps)
Rnd 2: Sl st into ch-3 sp, [ch 3, dc, ch 2, 2 dc] in same ch-3 sp, [2 tr, ch 2, 2 tr] in each of next 2 ch-3 sps, [2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc] in next ch-3 sp, ch 1, [2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc] in next ch-3 sp, [2 tr, ch 2, 2 tr] in each of next 2 ch-3 sps, [2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc] in next ch-3 sp, with WS tog, fold Rnd 2 in half, sl st in ch-1 sp, join in 3rd ch of beg ch-3, fasten off.

Body & Antennae
With white, ch 12, wrap around center of wing pieces (tr end is front of butterfly), sl st in 4th ch from hook, ch 4, fasten off.

Sew butterfly centered over sewn seam of headband.

Flower Headband

With pink cotton, rep band as for butterfly headband.

Flower
Rnd 1: With white, ch 4, join to form a ring, ch 1, [sc in ring, ch 5] 6 times, join in beg sc.
Rnd 2: Sl st into ch-5 sp, ch 1, 6 sc in same ch-5 sp, sl st in next sc, [6 sc in next ch-5 sp, sl st in next sc] rep around, join in beg sc, leaving a length of cotton, fasten off.

Leaf
Make 2
Rnd 1: With mint, ch 5, sl st in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next ch, hdc in next ch, 5 hdc in next ch, working on opposite side of foundation ch, hdc in next ch, sc in next ch, sl st in last ch, leaving a length of cotton, fasten off.

Sew flower centered over sewn seam. Sew a leaf under flower petals on each side. Sew pearl bead to center of flower.
