Cool Stripes Hat

Materials:

  • Worsted yarn -- 3 1/2 oz. blue,
  • 1 oz. each white and green;
  • 3"-square cardboard;
  • tapestry needle;
  • hook needed to obtain gauge for size.

Sizes:

Small, fits 13" to 15" head.
Gauge: F hook, 9 sc = 2", 9 sc
back lp rows = 2"; 9 dc = 2", 9 dc rows = 4".

Medium, fits 15" to 17" head.
Gauge: G hook, 4 sc = 1", 4 sc
back lp rows = 1"; 4 dc = l", 4 dc rows = 2".

Large, fits 17" to 20" head.
Gauge: H hook, 7 sc = 2", 7 sc
back lp rows = 2"; 7 dc = 2", 7 dc rows = 4".

Ex. Large, fits 20" to 23" head.
Gauge: I hook, 3 sc = 1", 3 sc
back lp rows = 1"; 3 dc = 1", 3 dc rows = 2".

Stitches Used:
Ch, sl st, sc, dc and long sc.

Band
Row 1: For Ribbing, with blue, ch 9, sc in second ch from hook, sc in each ch across, turn. (8 sc)
Rows 2-60: Working these rows in back lps, ch 1, sc in each st across, turn.
Row 61: For Center Back Seam, ch 1, sl st first and last rows tog to form rib, do not turn.
Rnd 62: For Inner Band, working in ends of rows on Ribbing, ch 1, sc in each row around, join with sl st in first sc. (60 sts).
Rnd 63: Working in front lps, ch 1, sc in each st around, join as before.
Rnds 64-66: Working in both lps, ch 3 (counts as first dc), dc in each st around, join with sl st in top of beg ch-3. At end of last rnd, do not fasten off.

Crown
Rnds 1-3: Ch 1, sc in each st around, join with sl st in first sc. (60 sts) At end of last rnd, fasten off.
Rnd 4: Join white with sc in first st, sc in each st around, join as before.
Rnd 5: Ch 1, sc in each st around, join. Fasten off.
Rnd 6: Join green with sc in first st; for long sc (see illustration), working around last rnd, sc in next st on rnd before last, [sc in next st on last rnd, long sc in next st on rnd before last] rep around: join.
Rnd 7: Ch 1, sc in each st around, join. Fasten off.
Rnd 8: Join blue with sc in first st, sc in each st around, join.
Rnd 9: Ch 1, sc in each st around, join. Fasten off.
Rnds 10-26: Repeat mds 4-9 consecutively, ending with rnd 8.
Rnds 27-28: Ch 1, [sc dec in next 2 sts] rep around, join with sl st in first sc. (30, 15 sts) At end of last rnd, leaving an 8" strand for weaving, fasten off. Weave strand through sts of last rnd, pull tight and secure.
Fold Ribbing on Band to right side of work.

Pom-Pom
With one strand each green and blue held together, wrap around cardboard 100 times: slide loops off cardboard. Tie separate 8" strand yarn tightly around center of all loops. Cut loops, trim ends. Sew to center top of Crown.

Ear Flaps (optional)
Row 1: For First Flap, with Ribbing side of Band facing you, working in unworked back lps of rnd 62, join blue with sc in ninth st past Center Back Seam, sc in next 9 sts, turn. (10 sc)
Row 2: Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn.
Rows 3-5: Ch 1, sk first st, sc in each st across to last 2 sts, sc dec in last 2 sts, turn. (8, 6, 4 sts)
Row 6: Ch 1, sk first st, sc in next st, sc dec in last 2 sts, turn; for Tie, ch 51, sl st in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, sl st in last sc. Fasten off.
For Second Flap, sk next 23 sts of rnd 62 across front of Band; joining in next st, work same as First Flap.

Brim (optional)
Row 1: Working in back lps of 23 skipped sts on rnd 62 of Band, with Ribbing side of Band facing you, join blue with sc in sixth st past First Flap, sc in same st, 2 sc in next 12 sts leaving next 5 sts to Second Flap unworked, turn. (26 sc)
Row 2: Ch 1, sl st in each of first 3 sts, sc in next 20 sts, sl st in each of last 3 sts. Fasten off.

Tiny Bubbles Hat

  • Worsted yarn -- 3 1/2 oz. dk. peach,
  • 1 1/2 oz. each lt. peach and lt. green;
  • 3"-square cardboard;
  • tapestry needle;
  • hook needed to obtain gauge for size.

Sizes:

Small, fits 13" to 15" head.
Gauge: F hook, 9 sc = 2", 9 sc
back lp rows = 2"; 9 dc = 2", 9 dc rows = 4".

Medium, fits 15" to 17" head.
Gauge: G hook, 4 sc = 1", 4 sc
back lp rows = 1"; 4 dc = l", 4 dc rows = 2".

Large, fits 17" to 20" head.
Gauge: H hook, 7 sc = 2", 7 sc
back lp rows = 2"; 7 dc = 2", 7 dc rows = 4".

Ex. Large, fits 20" to 23" head.
Gauge: I hook, 3 sc = 1", 3 sc
back lp rows = 1"; 3 dc = 1", 3 dc rows = 2".

Stitches Used:
Ch, sl st, sc, dc and puff st.

Band
With dk. peach, work same as Cool Stripes Hat Band, do not fasten off.

Crown
Rnd 1: Ch 1. sc in each st around, join with sl st in first st. (60 sts)
Rnd 2: Join lt. green with sc in first st, sc in each st around; to join and change color, insert hook in first sc, yo with lt. peach, pull through st and lp on hook.
NOTE: Drop unused color to wrong side of work, pick up again when needed,
Rnd 3: Ch 1, *sc in each of next 3 sts; for puff st, yo, insert hook in next st, yo, pull through st, (yo, insert hook in same st, yo, pull through st) 2 times, yo, pull through all 7 lps on hook; repeat from * around, join as before changing to lt. green. (45 sc, 15 puff sts)
Rnd 4: Ch 1, sc in each st around, join changing to lt. peach. (60 sc)
Rnds 5-22: Repeat rnds 3 and 4 alternately. At end of rnd 22, fasten off lt. green.
Rnds 23-24: Ch 1, [sc dec in next 2 sts] rep around, join with sl st in first sc. (30, 15 sts) At end of last rnd, leaving an 8" strand for weaving, fasten off. Weave strand through sts of last md, pull tight and secure.
Fold Ribbing on Band to right side of work.

Pom-Pom
Wrap dk. peach around cardboard 200 times; slide loops off cardboard. Tie separate 8" strand yarn tightly around center of all loops. Cut loops, trim ends. Sew to center top of Crown.

Ear Flaps & Brim (optional)
With dk. peach, work same as Cool Stripes Hat Ear Flaps and Brim.
