Checkered Hot Mats

Liven up your kitchen with this set of brightly colored hot mats. Red and green checks accented with cheerful motifs make these kitchen helpers extra-special!

Approximately 10 1/2" square

Materials

  • Red Heart Classic worsted weight yarn (31/2 oz per skein): 2 skeins white #1 (A), 1 skein each paddy green #686 (B) and jockey red #902 (C), and small amount yellow #230 (D)
  • Size G/6 crochet hook or size needed to obtain gauge
  • Tapestry needle

Gauge
18 sc and 19 sc rows = 5"
To save time, take time to check gauge.

Pattern Notes
Join rnds with a sl st unless otherwise stated.
To change color in sc, insert hook in last st before color change, yo with working color, draw up a lp, drop working color to WS, yo with next color, complete sc.
Carry color not in use loosely across back of work until needed again; do not work over color not in use.

Pattern Stitch
Picot (p): Ch 3, sl st in 3rd ch from hook.

Poinsettia Hot Mat

First Side
Rows 1: With A, ch 33, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each of next 3 chs, changing to B in last st, *sc in each of next 4 chs with B **, changing to A in last st, sc in each of next 4 sts with A, changing to B in last st, rep from * across, ending last rep at **, do not change to A, turn. (32 sc)
Row 2: Matching colors on work-ing row to colors on previous row, sc in each sc across, ch 1, turn.
Rows 3 & 4: Rep Row 2, changing to B at end of Row 4.
Row 5: Working B over A and A over B, sc in each sc across, ch 1, turn.
Rows 6-8: Rep Row 2, changing to A at end of Row 8.
Rows 9-32: Work even on 32 sc in established check pattern, at end of Row 32, fasten off.

Second Side
Rows 1-32: Rep Rows 1-32 of first side.

Poinsettia
Rnd 1: With D, ch 4, join to form a ring, ch 1, 8 sc in ring, join in beg sc, fasten off.
Rnd 2: Attach C with a sl st in back lp only of any sc of last rnd, [ch 8, sc in 2nd ch from hook, hdc in next ch, dc in next ch, tr in next ch, dc in next ch, hdc in next ch, sc in last ch, sl st in back lp only of next sc on Rnd 1] rep around, fasten off, leaving 18" end for sewing.
With tapestry needle, sew poin-settia to bottom left corner of first side

Border
Rnd 1: With WS of first and 2nd sides tog, working through both thicknesses, attach C with a sl st in upper right corner, ch 1, sc in same st, sc in each st across to next corner, 4 sc in corner st, sc evenly sp over row ends to next corner, 4 sc in corner st, sc in each rem lp across opposite side of foundation ch to next corner, 4 sc in corner st, sc evenly sp over row ends to next corner, 2 sc in same st as beg sc, ch 8 for hanging lp, sc in same st as last 2 sc, join in beg sc, fasten off.
Rnd 2: Attach A with a sl st in back lp only of last sc of last rnd, ch 3 (counts as first dc), working in back lps only, 4 dc in same st, *sk next st, sc in next st, sk next st, 5 dc in next st, rep from *around, working behind hang-ing lp and adjusting number of sts sk at end of rnd, if necessary, so patt rep comes out even, join in beg sc.

Holly Berry Hot Mat

First Side
Rows 1-32: Rep Rows 1-32 of first side for Poinsettia Hot Mat, substituting C for B.

Second Side
Rows 1-32: Rep Rows 1-32 of 2nd side for Poinsettia Hot Mat, substituting C for B.

Holly Leaf (make 2)
Row 1: With B, ch 10, sc in 2nd ch from hook, *hdc in next ch, dc in next ch, p, dc in next ch, hdc in next ch, dc in next ch, p, dc in next ch, hdc in next ch*, 3 sc in last ch; working across opposite side of foundation ch, rep from * to *, sc in last ch, fasten off, leaving an 18" end of loose yarn for sewing.

Holly Berry (make 3)
With C, ch 4, join to form a ring, ch 1, 6 sc in ring, join in beg sc, leaving 12" length for sewing. With tapestry needle, using photo as a guide, sew holly leaves and berries to bottom left corner of first side.

Rnd 1:With B, rep Rnd 1 of border for Poinsettia Hot Mat.
Rnd 2:With A, rep Rnd 2 of border for Poinsettia Hot Mat.
