- 4 oz. {113 g}, [5 oz. {142 g}, 6 oz. {170 g}] gray
- Small amount each: off-white, gold, lavender and rust
- 2 white 3/8" x 1" {10-mm x 2.5-cm} dog bone novelty buttons
- Matching sewing thread
- Sewing and tapestry needles
- H {5-mm} crochet hook or size needed to obtain gauge
SIZE
Instructions given fit small dog. Changes for medium and large are in [].
GAUGE
4 hdc = 1" {2.5 cm}; 5 hdc rows = 2" {5.1 cm}. Each Motif is 3" {7.6 cm} square.
MOTIF (make 9 [16, 25])
NOTES: Use off-white, lavender or rust as desired for rnds 1 and 2.
Beginning ch-2 is used and counted as first hdc.
Rnd 1: With desired color, ch 4, sl st in first ch to form ring, ch 2, 2 hdc in ring, ch 2, (3 hdc in ring, ch 2) 3 times, join with sl st in top of ch-2, fasten off (12 hdc, 4 ch-2 sps).
Rnd 2: Join next desired color with sl st in any ch sp, ch 2, (2 hdc, ch 2, 3 hdc) in same sp, ch 1, *(3 hdc, ch 2, 3 hdc) in next ch sp, ch 1; repeat from * around, join, fasten off (4 ch-2 sps, 4 ch-1 sps).
Rnd 3: Join gray with sl st in any ch-2 sp, ch 2, (2 hdc, ch 2, 3 hdc) in same sp, ch 1, 3 hdc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, *(3 hdc, ch 2, 3 hdc) in next ch-2 sp, ch 1, 3 hdc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1; repeat from * around, join, fasten off (8 ch-1 sps, 4 ch-2 sps).
Holding Motifs wrong sides together, matching sts and ch sps, with gray, sew together through back lps in 3 [4, 5] rows of 3 [4, 5] Motifs each.
FIRST SIDE
Row 1: Working across one side of Motifs, join gray with sl st in any corner ch-2 sp, ch 2, hdc in same sp, (hdc in each of next 3 sts, hdc in next ch-1 sp) 2 times, hdc in each of next 3 sts; for small size only, hdc in next ch-2 sp leaving remaining sts unworked, turn; for medium size only, hdc in next ch-2 sp, skip next seam, hdc in next ch-2 sp, hdc in next st, leaving remaining sts unworked, turn; for large size only, hdc in next ch-2 sp, skip next seam, hdc in next ch-2 sp, hdc in each of next 3 sts leaving remaining sts unworked, turn (14 hdc) [16 hdc, 18 hdc].
Row 2: For all sizes, ch 2, hdc next 2 sts tog, hdc in each st across, turn (13) [15, 17].
Row 3: Ch 2, hdc in each st across to last 2 sts, hdc last 2 sts tog, turn (12) [14, 16].
Rows 4-5 [4-7, 4-9]: Repeat rows 2 and 3 alternately, ending with 10 sts in last row.
Rows 6-19 [8-21, 10-23] or to desired length to fit to front of neck: Ch 2, hdc in each st across, turn, ending with an odd-numbered row.
Row 20 [22, 24]: For strap, ch 2, hdc next 2 sts tog, hdc in each st across to last 2 sts, hdc last 2 sts tog, turn (8).
Rows 21-23 [23-25, 25-27]: Ch 2, hdc in each st across, turn.
Rows 24-28 [26-30, 28-32]: Repeat rows 20-23 [22-25, 24-27] consecutively, ending with row 20 [22, 24] and 4 sts in last row.
Rows 29-40 [31-44, 33-48] or to desired length to fit crossed over chest to center of Motifs: Ch 2, hdc in each st across, turn, ending with an even-numbered row.
Row 41 [45, 49]: Ch 2, skip next st, hdc in each of last 2 sts, turn (3).
Rows 42-43 [46-47, 50-51]: Ch 2, hdc in each st across, turn. At end of last row, fasten off.
SECOND SIDE
Row 1: For small size only, with right side of Motifs facing you, working across same edge as First Side, join gray with sl st in first corner ch sp on last Motif, ch 2, hdc in each of next 3 sts, (hdc in next ch-1 sp, hdc in each of next 3 sts) 2 times, 2 hdc in last ch-2 sp, turn (14 hdc).
Row 1: For medium size only, with right side of Motifs facing you, working across same edge as First Side, join gray with sl st in first dc before seam between 3rd and 4th Motifs, ch 2, hdc in next ch-2 sp, skip next seam, hdc in next ch-2 sp, hdc in each of next 3 sts, (hdc in next ch-1 sp, hdc in each of next 3 sts) 2 times, 2 hdc in last ch-2 sp, turn (16 hdc).
Row 1: For large size only, with right side of Motifs facing you, working across same edge as First Side, join gray with sl st in 3rd dc before seam between 4th and 5th Motifs, ch 2, hdc in each of next 2 sts, hdc in next ch-2 sp, skip next seam, hdc in next ch-2 sp, hdc in each of next 3 sts, (hdc in next ch-1 sp, hdc in each of next 3 sts) 2 times, 2 hdc in last ch-2 sp, turn (18 hdc).
Row 2: For all sizes, ch 2, hdc in each st across to last 2 sts, hdc last 2 sts tog, turn (13) [15, 17].
Row 3: Ch 2, hdc next 2 sts tog, hdc in each st across, turn (12) [14, 16].
Rows 4-5 [4-7, 4-9]: Repeat rows 2 and 3 alternately, ending with 10 sts in last row.

Row 1: Working in sts and in ends of rows across neckline, join gray with sc in row 17 [19, 21] on right-hand side, evenly space 59 [71, 83] more sc across to row 17 [19, 21] of left-hand side, turn (60 sc) [72 sc, 84 sc].
NOTE: For cross stitch (cr st), skip next st, dc in next st; working around last st, dc in skipped st.
Row 2: For first side, ch 3, cr st 14 [17, 20] times, dc in next st leaving remaining sts unworked, turn (14 cr sts and 2 dc) [17 cr sts and 2 dc, 20 cr sts and 2 dc].
Row 3: Ch 3, dc next 2 sts tog, cr st across to last st, 2 dc in last st, turn.
Row 4: Ch 3, dc in next st, cr st across to last 2 sts, dc last 2 sts tog, turn.

Sew buttons to each strap 11⁄2" {3.8 cm} from end using sp between center cr sts on each side of Motif section for buttonholes.
