Country Christmas Booties

Capture old-fashioned country charm in this pair of little stockings. Those tiny bits of yarn you couldn't bear to toss can now be used as patches or stripes in these darling folk ornaments.

Finished Measurements:
4 1/4" wide x 4 1/2" long

Materials

  • Striped Stocking
    • Sport weight yarn: small amount each red, green and white
    • 16" 1/4"-wide green ribbon
  • Patchwork Stocking
    • Sport weight yarn: small amount each red, green, white, blue and yellow
    • 1/2" buttons: 2 white and 1 each yellow, blue, red and green
    • Sewing needle and sewing thread
  • Both Projects
    • Size G/6 crochet hook or size needed to obtain gauge
    • Bobbins (optional)

Gauge
9 sts and 10 rows = 2" in sc
To save time, take time to check gauge.

Pattern Notes
Join rnds with a sl st unless otherwise stated.
To change color in sc, work last st before color change as follows: Insert hook in next st, yo with working color, draw up a lp, drop working color to WS, yo with next color, complete sc.
When working from chart, read all odd-numbered (RS) rows from right to left, all even-numbered (WS) rows from left to right.
Do not carry color not in use across WS of work. Use bobbins or wind small balls of yarn for each separate color section.

Striped Stocking
First Side
Row 1 (RS): With green, ch 5, drop green to WS, yo with red, draw through lp on hook, ch 6 with red, 2 sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each of next 4 chs, changing to green in last sc; sc in each of next 5 chs with green, 2 sc in last ch, ch 1, turn. (6 red sc; 7 green sc)
Rows 2-16: Follow Striped Stocking chart for first side, changing colors and working sc incs and sc decs at begs and ends of rows as indicated; ch 1, turn at end of each row; at end of Row 16, do not fasten off; ch 1, turn.

Edging
2 sc in first st, sc in each st across to last st, 3 sc in last st; working in red over red-and-white striped sections and in green over green sections, sc over end st of each row and in each rem lp of foundation ch around, join in beg sc, fasten off.

Second Side
Row 1 (RS): With red, ch 4, drop red to WS, yo with green, draw through lp on hook, ch 7 with green, 2 sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each of next 5 chs, changing to red in last st; sc in each of next 4 chs with red, 2 sc in last st, ch 1, turn. (7 green sc; 6 red sc)
Rows 2-16: Follow Striped Stocking chart for 2nd side, changing colors and working sc incs and sc decs at begs and ends of rows as indicated; ch 1, turn at end of each row; at end of Row 16, do not fasten off; ch 1, turn.

Edging
Rep instructions for edging for first side.
With RS tog, using tapestry
needle and matching yarn to sections being joined, sew first and 2nd sides tog. Turn stocking RS out.

Cuff
Rnd 1: With RS facing, attach white with a sl st at top back seam, ch 1, beg in same st, work 32 sc evenly sp around, join in beg sc.
Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in same st as joining and in each rem st around, join in beg sc. (32 sc)
Rnd 3: Ch 3 (counts as first dc), dc in each rem st around, join in 3rd ch of beg ch-3. (32 dc)
Rnd 4: Ch 1, sc in same st as joining, *sk next st, 3 dc in next st, sk next st **, sc in next st, rep from * around, ending last rep at **, join in beg sc, ch 12 for hanging lp, sl st in joining st, fasten off.

Finishing
Beg at center on first side, weave ribbon through dcs of Rnd 3. Tie ends in bow.

Patchwork Stocking
First Side
Row 1: With red, ch 12, 2 sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next ch, changing to green; sc in each of next 7 chs, changing to blue in last sc; sc in next ch with blue, 2 sc in last ch, ch 1, turn. (13 sc)
Rows 2-16: Follow Patchwork Stocking chart for first side, changing colors and working sc incs and sc decs at begs and ends of rows as indicated; ch 1, turn at end of each row; at end of Row 16, do not fasten off; ch 1, turn.

Edging
Matching color to section being worked, 2 sc in first st, sc across to last st, 3 sc in last st; with red, sc over end st of each row and in each rem lp of foundation ch around, join in beg sc, fasten off.
With sewing needle and sewing thread, using photo as a guide, sew buttons to RS at points indicated on Patchwork Stocking graph.

Second Side
Row 1: Rep Row 1 of first side.
Rows 2-16: Follow Patchwork Stocking chart for 2nd side, changing colors and working sc incs and sc decs at begs and ends of rows as indicated; ch 1, turn at end of each row; at end of Row 16, do not fasten off; ch 1, turn.

Edging
With red, rep instructions for edging for first side.
With RS tog, using tapestry needle and red, sew first and 2nd sides tog. Turn stocking RS out.

Cuff
Rnds 1 & 2: Rep Rnds 1 and 2 of cuff for Striped Stocking.
Rnd 3: Ch 3 (counts as first dc),
2 dc in same st as joining, *sk next st, sc in next st, sk next st **, 3 dc in next st, rep from * around, ending last rep at **, join in 3rd ch of beg ch-3.
Rnd 4: Sl st in next dc, ch 1, sc in same st, *[dc, ch 2, dc] in next sc **, sc in center dc of next 3-dc group, rep from * around, ending last rep at **, join in beg sc, ch 12 for hanging lp, sl st in joining st, fasten off.
